Tips In Keeping Old Post Fresh And Evergreen And Still Receive Decent Traffic

Most bloggers and writers don’t even think of what will become of their old blog post/articles.
One big problem about blogs is the content is time base – the techniques, trick or tips that work today is likely to become outdated and irrelevant as time progresses.
With the increasing importance place on fresh quality content by search engines like Google; in other words, fresh content in a way influences ranking of website on serp, check out this seomoz article on how fresh content can influence rankings.

Am going to be sharing some vital tips on how to keep our old blog posts or articles fresh and still receive steady organic traffic from search engines like Google, bing, ask.com etc.

  1. Revisit Old Post

    The first step in keeping your blog post fresh and evergreen is by revisiting old post, by so doing, you might find information that is out of date or incorrect. This will give you an opportuniy to update the information and make changes where neccessary.

  2. Linking To Old Post

    One Of The best way to keep old post fresh and still receive traffic is by linking to them with a descriptive anchor text when writing new post. Always link to old blog post that has a relationship or similar to a new blog post.

  3. Random Post Widget

    The use of random post widget is one of the most common method that is used in generating traffic to older post thereby making them evergreen.
    A random post widget display certain number of post selected randomly from all your blog post. The use of Related Post widget can be use to complement the effort of random post plugin/widget.

  4. Periodically Share Old Post To Social Media

    Once in a while, you should share some old quality blog post to social network or bookmarking site so as to gain some exposure.

    If your blog running on WordPress, you can install tweet old post or tweetily plugin.

    These plugin connect your blog to your twitter account and tweet links of your old blog post at pre-set intervals.

  5. Changing Post timestamp

    Most blog homepage display latest post. This method involving changing old post publish date to present date.
    Warning Not to be done on blog with date in permalink because it will lead to 404 error when user try to visit your blog via the old URL.

  6. Ask Readers To Submit Questions Or Contribution

    Asking your readers or visitors to submit questions and contributions allow you to gather informations that you might have missed while writing the post.
    There’s a possibility that your readers will submit some unique questions that you can answer and might end up as great idea that you can add to your old post.

  7. Read Blog Comment And Forums Post

    Reading other blogs comment and post in forum belonging to same niche as you, can be a source of information and idea you could use in updating that old post of yours.

  8. Use Of Google Alert Service

    Google Alert is one of my most love Google product. What this service does is you subscribe to a word or phrase of interest, and you receive alert in your mail box, iGoogle page or as a web feed, when new content from news, web, blogs, video and/or discussion groups matches your alert subscribed words or phrase.

  9. Remove Date From Post And Permalink

    Nowadays, when a visitor is searching for a post or article, and they stumble on a post dated years back, they immediately go back and look else where. This increases bounce rate. Readers are always looking for fresh post or solution and they tend to neglect old post.
    optionally remove post date from your site body and permalink.
    As for this blog, i wrote a few lines of code that eliminate post date from post older than two(2) years. If you want this feature too in your blog, follow the steps below:
    * Navigate to your WordPress theme files either via FTP or WP dashboard “Editor” located as a submenu under Appearance.
    * In page.php and single.php, Find and replace < ?php the_time('F J, Y'); ?> with

    < ?php $x=the_time('Y');
    $y=date('Y');
    $z=$y-$x; if($z<"2") {the_time('F j, Y');} ?>
    

    .

    Change 2 up to the number of years you want the post date to display.
