Staying Compliant with Google Adsense Program Policies

I got a mail from the Google Adsense team stating one or more pages of this blog aren’t compliant with their policies.

The email was titled Google AdSense: Action required to comply with AdSense program policies. An excerpt of the content below.

—————————————————————————————————————
Hello,
This is a warning message to alert you that there is action required to bring your AdSense account into compliance with our AdSense program policies. We’ve provided additional details below, along with the actions to be taken on your part.

Violation explanation

Publishers may not implement Google ads in a manner that disguises the ads in any way. In order to maintain a good user experience, it is important for publishers to clearly distinguish Google ads from site content. This includes, but is not limited to: site layouts in which the ads push content below the fold on mobile devices; placing 300×250 or larger ad units above the fold on a mobile optimized site.

—————————————————————————————————————

The meat of the email is, my blog when viewed on mobile, violates the policy that states:

Publishers should ensure that their mobile site layouts do not cause ads to push the page content below the fold. For this reason, we don’t allow 300×250 ad units (or larger) above the fold on mobile as this layout requires the user to scroll down to view site content.

Below is a screenshot of this blog on mobile when it wasn’t compliant with the above policy.

Solution

If you are similar situation, the solution is simply to use the recommended 320×100 ad unit above the fold on the mobile version of your site.

If your website has a responsive design like mine, using the responsive ad unit above the fold (aka the top fold of the page a user can see without scrolling down) is recommended because calculation of the required ad size is carried out dynamically based on the width of the ad unit’s parent container, then determine what’s the best standard height to go with that width.

In a nutshell, using 320×100 above the fold and 300×250 below the fold is the recommended ad unit placement for mobile.

La Fin!
